The hoops poor run continued with a narrow defeat at the Meadows against Ellon Utd. We looked dead and buried 2-0 down, and also lost Gaz to a second yellow but we managed to get one back and have enough of the play in the second half to get another but an equalier eluded us meaning another 3 points slipped away.
It was a slow start by the visitors and we relied on big Andy twice in the opening stages to keep the scoreline blank. Firstly a 25 yarder took a wicked deflection but the keeper did well to get across and tip the ball over. From the resultant corner the home number 4 was given a free header but Andy leaped to push that one away. It took until the 25th minute for the hoops to register an effort on goal, but it was a close one as Yeats’ free kick from 25 yards took a deflection and went inches over. Two minutes later Ellon were in front when a near post cross found JOHNSON and he flicked the ball into the far corner. Shortly after that Yeats tried another free kick from a similar position to his first one and this time forced a fine save from the home keeper and Ellon held the interval lead.
HT: 1-0
Into the second half and it was Yeats who had another chance with a header from a corner but his header sailed over. Ellon were to punish us with 53 mins on the clock when Gaz gave away a free kick just outside the box and picked up a yellow. JOHNSON took the kick and his knee high effort found the bottom corner to increase the home side’s lead. Wallace just couldn’t get anything on a header and Leith found the side net before we grabbed a lifeline just after the hour. A corner was missed by the home keeper and GAZ was there to nod in from a couple of yards out. Within a minute though we shot ourselves in the foot yet again when scorer Gaz collected a booking for a trip, and with it being his second of the day it was followed by a red. Despite that though we then proceeded to have the bulk of the play, Leith fired just over and an indirect free kick in the box saw Mark’s shot blocked by the wall. Andy had to look smart at the other end to deny Ellon a third with a good block following a quick break as the hoops pushed forward. Napier saw a shot deflected over and there were loud appeals for a penalty when Steven B went down in the box but the appeals were waived aside and the home side held on to take all three points.
