Match report

The hoops at last got back to winning ways with a hard fought win over Ellon Utd at IMP. It was a late goal that got us through, and one with a bit of controversy, but the we things are going we will take any breaks going as plenty have gone against us in recent weeks.
The home side were handed a massive boost during the week with the return of Gogs following a spell down under, and he slotted straight back in with a performance that would have made anyone think he had never been away. With both Mike and Murray away on business skipper Mark to over the reigns in the dugout for the day.
The game kicked off in chilly conditions and it was Ellon who showed first, with Andy blocking a low shot from Anderson and Sim knocked the rebound wide. Dyce went straight up to the other end and Wallace and Dicky linked up well on the left but the latter' low cross just evaded Steven B. Wallace had a go from 25 yards with a vicious low shot that seemed to swerve a bit and Fraser blocked with his feet. The visitor's Tait burst through the inside left but Leith did brilliantly to track back and get in a fine tackle. Other than that there was little goalmouth action, with Ellon probably having the greater share of possession but it was goal-less at the break.
Both sides forced a couple of fruitless corners early in the second period and just before the hour stand in coach Mark put on Taylor for Gaz to try and liven things up. The striker had an instant chance but he delayed his shot allowing Coutts to make a good blocking tackle. Taylor then appeared to be pushed in the box as a corner from Ads was swung over but whistler Nicol was unsighted so nothing was doing there. A quick break down the left saw a combination of Andy and Gogs combine to scramble the ball clear. Wallace saw a shot comfortably held and just as it looked like the game would go to a spot kick decider came the only goal of the game. There were just 6 minutes left when Dicky won the ball on the right and he advanced to the edge of the box and put a great ball across goal to the far post. As Mike TAYLOR ran in Fraser dived and got a touch to the ball, meaning that when Mike swung his right peg to knock the ball in it came up and bounced off his thigh. On to his chest. Then on to what looked a tad like his right hand and the ball dropped over the line and in. Despite visiting protests the goal stood. Three minutes later Ellon almost grabbed a leveller when Anderson smashed in a tremendous effort from 30 yards. It was hit with some venom and was swerving and dipping in until Andy leapt across and managed to tip the ball over. Top drawer save that one. Tremaine also nodded then ball over Andy and in but the flag was up well before that to cut short any celebrations. Overall it was as tight a game as expected, with the visitors shading the first half but the hoops coming back strongly and having the better of the second half exchanges and advancing into the next round.
