Match report

It was a game of two halves at Glenury Park as the hoops squeezed through to the quarter final of the McLaman Cup at the expense of Stonehaven. The home side deservedly led 2-1 at the break but a much improved second half showing saw the game turned around to set up a trip to Ellon Utd in the next round.

The Hive kicked off on a soft pitch and immediately were on the front foot, with loan keeper Reid having to make a fantastic early save to deny Mackie. As the hoops struggled to get going it was no surprise when the homesters took an 11th minute lead, with WATSON latching on to a through ball and slotting past Reid. It was out of nothing that we would level things seven minutes later. With the scribe otherwise engaged temporarily a spot kick was awarded when Esslemont apparently went down in the box. The decision saw furious protests from the home players and spectators alike, but once things calmed down ESSLEMONT himself took the kick and levelled things. The remainder of the half saw the Hive continue to have more of the ball and they were rewarded just three minutes before the break when an inswinging corner found WATSON and he bundled the ball in from close range.

Into the second period and the visitors at last started to look a bit more purposeful, although when Esslemont cut in from the left his shot flew well over and was never going to trouble the home keeper. On the hour mark Mike Taylor and Ads were introduced in place of Esslemont and Gaz and midway through the half the equaliser arrived. A good build up at the edge of the box involving a couple of one-two’s ended with MARK B sweeping the ball into the corner from 16 yards. The parity was almost wiped out soon after but Reid saved well from Watson and Armstrong’s follow up effort was blocked. The hoops were beginning to take control of things though and in the 77th minute were awarded a second spot kick. This time there was a nudge in StevenB’s back at the near post which was spotted by whistler Misiak and this time LEITHO netted the penalty. Another couple of chances came and went but there was to be no further scoring.
