The Hoops had to fight back from two goals down to rescue a point against Maud at IMP. The pre-match music was Winter Wonderland and Let It Snow, with the white stuff coming down for pretty much the entire match but credit to both sets of players for enduring the conditions and serving up four goals.
Both sides had early efforts, both from outside the box, both of which went wide of goal. Mikey taylor headed a free kick wide with Fyfe touching Mark’s drive round the post but neither keeper was being troubled too much. Then in the final 6 minutes of the half things livened up. Firstly Leitho did well on the left and his cross found Taylor four yards out with an open goal. Mikey somehow headed the ball into the ground with it then bouncing up and off the top of the bar. Leitho’s next cross found Mark but Fyfe made a fine save from his header. Maud punished us for not taking those chances in the final minute of the half with a simple goal as an in-swinging corner found MACKIE unmarked and he headed in the opener.
The hoops came out on the front foot and Taylor and defender Crisp went for a high ball. It came off one of their heads and for the second time the ball came back of Maud’s bar. The visitors then attacked and Reid saved well from Mackie. 10 mins into the second half the village side doubled their lead with a carbon copy of their first goal, this time CRISP heading in the corner. Yeats hit a 30 yarder which deceived Fyfe but the keeper recovered well to block Mark’s effort from the rebound. With quarter of an hour to go the homesters grabbed a lifeline when Leitho swung in a corner and this time CRISP headed past his own keeper. Four minutes later the game was level, Burnett doing well on the left to beat his man and fire in a cross the ESSLEMONT ran on to and bulleted a header high into the net. Reid had to save well from Norris and Esslemont flicked one wide before the end but there was to be no further scoring, and on the balance of play and chances created a point apiece was a fair enough outcome.
