After the fantastic opening league match when the Hoops put five past Bridge of Don Thistle, we were brought back down to earth at Inverurie as a last gasp goal gave Colony Park the points in a tight encounter. We were punished for not taking chances as there were plenty created, but with the game looking like ending goal-less the Garioch men got the only goal at the best possible time to take all three points.
The match kicked off on a warm day with pitch in fine condition and Gaz and Coyle both tried their luck from outside the box but both were off target. Young Kyle had to be sharp off his line to block from the Colony 9 after a short passback and the keeper also held a shot fired straight at him. Coyle had another go this time with a lob which was well cleared off the line before the Hoops were dealt a blow in the 21st minute. With Gogs already out injured, fellow centre half Tom Hutch also had to come off with a knock. Home skipper McKay came close with a shot from the corner of the box which landed on the roof of the net, then at the other end Hoops top scorer Baillie came close when Steven B did well to play him in but his fierce shot smacked off the top of the bar. Ten minutes before the break McKay hit the outside of the post for the homesters and a couple of minutes later we almost grabbed the lead. Steven B played in Baillie again and his shot was well parried by the Colony keeper, who then made an even better save from Coyle’s follow up effort to keep the scoreline blank at the break.
The second half followed the same pattern, both teams having possession and creating openings. Colony had a couple of efforts early on go over and Baillie’s shot on the run at the other end went wide. The striker saw another shot deflected into the side net and Mark B had a shot cleared off the line as the visitors started to look the more likely to score. However Colony came back and a close range header went straight at Kyle. Sub Barron and Ads both saw efforts blocked and Mark B fired one inches past. Mark then had another chance but tried to tee up Baillie instead of shooting and the chance was gone. Colony weathered that little storm and took full advantage by grabbing a winner after 90 minutes. A throw on their left was in turn laid into the path of BONARIUS at the edge of the box and he finished well drilling the ball into the bottom corner to cue some wild celebrations. Whilst we created enough chances to win the game, chances have to be taken and all credit to Colony who kept us out whilst also playing some good stuff themselves and getting the all important winner.
