The Hoops made it into round 2 of the Quest Inter regional Cup after a hard fought win at Ellon. Recent matches at the Meadows have been eventful affairs, and this one would be no different. Two penalties, should have been a third, six goals and two red cards meant plenty to talk about afterwards, albeit there was hardly a bad tackle in the game.
The hoops started well and were rewarded with the opener in the 14th minute. Leitho, who gave the home full back a torrid afternoon skinned him on the left and was scythed down in the box. A stonewaller and LEITHO took the spot kick himself and sent former Dycer Sid Kirton in the home goal the wrong way.Just before the half hour the lead was doubled. A quick corner from Leitho found Blair Johnston, and his left foot cross found the in-rushing Wayne BARRON and he thumped a header high past Kirton. However the game took a twist in the 38th Minutes. Blair challenged an Ellon player 25 yards out and although it was certainly a case of high feet the straight red card he received looked extremely harsh. It was the last meaningful action of the half and the man advantage would have given Ellon some hope for the second half.
It didn’t take the homesters too long to make that advantage count when a cross from the right found TREMAINE in the box and from 7 yards our he headed the ball back across Andy and into the corner. A few minutes later it was all square. A free kick wasn’t cleared and it was nodded into the path of TREMAINE and he volleyed in from close range to square things up. The blue & whites re-grouped though and Mark B headed over from 6 yards with Leitho setting up a couple of other chances as he continued to torment the full back. A second spot kick should have arrived when Baillie was tripped as he looked set to pull the trigger in the box but whistler Galazka waived play on. Leitho was booked for protesting, which would prove costly later on. However in the 77th minute the Hoops regained the lead, when BAILLIE latched on to a through ball and slotted well past Kirton. The game was wrapped up in the final minute when Baillie was pushed in the box and this time the penalty was given, which LEITHO duly blasted high into the net. The midfielder was then brought down on the halfway line and after landing on the ball he rolled it away a few yards and that was deemed worthy of a second yellow and off he went.
